Pastaworks Giro del Vino 2014

To honor all things cycling and vinous, Pastaworks invites you to it's 31st season of wine classes, the Giro del Vino 2014, focusing on "tours" of Italy (the "Giros") and Spain (the "Vueltas") focusing on a region, terrain and the varietals of that particular area. There will also be a couple of "Classics" that will tour you through a specific varietal, color or terroir — but will cross borders to a smattering of different countries. So put on your favorite little dorky cycling cap, and join our knowledgable wine team, including co-owners Peter and Kevin de Garmo, and occasional guest teachers, for a great series of wine classes in 2014.

SCHEDULE

March 25 - Giro del Piemonte > This tour will take you from the rolling hills of eastern and southern Piedmont to the home of Barbera, Barolo and Barbaresco in the Langhe. Along the way you'll sample Cortese, Arneis, Moscato, a Freisa or two and of course the region's signature grape variety, Nebbiolo.

April 22 - Vuelta a la Rioja/Pais Vasco > This rugged tour transverses the steep Sierra Cantabria range, You'll dip along the Basque coastline and try a Txacoli or two before the climb up and over into the Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta. You'll stop along the way to visit legendary producers like R. Lopez de Heredia, and meet some of the emerging competitors like Remelluri.

May 27 - Classic Tour : Rosé > Portland may be well known as the Rose City, but it's also becoming known as the Rosé City because of its appreciation of all things pinkish (in a vinous sense). This Classic tour will introduce you to various shades of pink (not gray), from here and there, from soft to minerally, until you are convinced that pink wine is a year around wine, not just a summer infatuation.

June 24 - Giro di Toscana > The Chianti Road runs primarily from Florence to Siena, but there are some tasty and important detours to the east (Chianti Rufina) and south and west, Montalcino. Sangiovese is the grape of choice for reds, but how does it differ from zone to zone? To top off the evening, you'll sample one of our favorite Vin Santos.

July 22 - Giro Della Sicilia > Throw out the stereotypes (social and vinous) — Sicily is the hot new wine turf in Italy! From focused, crisp, elegant whites to aromatic, complex reds, Sicilian wines have come of age. This tour will visit volcanic heights and wind swept plains while introducing you to compelling wines.

September 23 - Vuelta a Jerez : Sherry > As wine writers from around the world will tell you, Sherry is one of the least appreciated, undervalued wines in the world. From sea kissed vineyards to inland plantings in white chalky soils, Sherry appears in wide range of styles, from bone dry to unctuously sweet. While this is mostly a flat stage, prepare for the heat!

October 21 - Giro Del Friuli/Veneto - Alto Adige > Here's a tour where if you don't know how to speak Italian, you might be able to use your German or Slovenian or Friulano language skills. Far northern and northeastern Italy is a microcosm of cultures and yes, wines. You'll move from Alpine peaks to the hard rock plateau of the Carso above Trieste as you sample both indigenous and international varieties (and sometimes a mix of both).

November 18 - Classic Tour : Bubbles > Are all sparkling wines created equal? Does California produce Champagne? Is "disgorgement" just another name for this side of the Gorge? Cava? Prosecco? Moscato? So many bubbles, so little time. This tour will prepare you for all of your holiday celebrations, and maybe even convince you that bubbles are not just a seasonal source of inspiration.
