ASHLAND, Ore. — The Oregon Tempranillo Alliance will stage its 2016 Oregon Tempranillo Celebration on Jan. 21-22, and the two-day event features analytical tastings and seminars by climatologist Greg Jones and geologist Scott Burns.

This inaugural event of the 35-member organization begins with a Tempranillo/tapas reception in Ashland on Thursday, Jan. 21. On the following day, the itinerary begins with seminars and follows with three analytical Tempranillo tastings.

Seminars include Jones’ presentation called Climates of Oregon’s Tempranillo Producing Regions Compared to Spain’s Benchmark Rioja and Ribera del Duero Regions. Jones is a professor of environmental science at Southern Oregon University.

Burns, a professor at Portland State University, will present Bedrock Geology and Soils of Oregon Tempranillo Producing Regions Compared to Spain’s Benchmark Rioja and Ribera del Duero Regions.

Analytical tastings will focus on the following:

Comparison of Tempranillo wines from the Applegate Valley, Columbia Valley, Hood River, Rogue North, Rogue South, Umpqua Valley and Willamette Valley.
Effect of soil type of Tempranillo wine quality
Effect of barrel and bottle aging on Tempranillo wine quality

Participating wineries may pour their full lineup of Tempranillo-based wines to attending distributors, retail shop and restaurant owners, wine stewards, sales persons, sommeliers and servers. This event is not open to the public.

Wineries also may submit as many as two Tempranillo-based wines for an evaluation by three-person panel which will share their findings. This is not a wine competition, however it will be a blind tasting and each winery will receive a confidential report. The panel includes:

Randy Caparoso, a restaurant wine consultant and journalist
Eric Degerman, award-winning wine journalist based in Richland, Wash., co-owner of GreatNorthwestWine.com, co-founder of Wine Press Northwest magazine and professional wine judge
Richard Jennings, wine writer/critic and founder of RJonWine.com.
